Nkayi man’s aspirations of marriage shattered after discovering that his fiancé was after-all his sister.

The world is filled with unpleasant surprises. A Nkayi man’s aspirations of wedding the girl of his dreams were shattered after discovering that his fiancé was after-all his sister.

The two lovers discovered they were shared the same father during a visit to Kana Mission hospital in Gokwe in which Nkululeko Mpofu (27) was scheduled to introduce Siphilisiwe Sibanda (24) to his aunt Betty Mpofu (52) who was hospitalised.

The two got distressed on arrival as they immediately learnt that they were offsprings of Betty Mpofu’s late brother Obed who had three other wives.
Nkayi man’s aspirations of marriage shattered after discovering that his fiancé was after-all his sister.
Betty Mpofu told of how everything came to be.

“Nkululeko brought Siphilisiwe to meet me for the first time. They were planning to get culturally married and then wed in October. I stay with Nkululeko in Nkayi and he is my brother’s child,” she said.

Betty was shocked to find out that the girl was infact one of her unknown brother’s children.

“It was during our discussions that I discovered that Siphilisiwe was one of my late brother’s daughters from a previous marriage. The minute the girl said her father was Obed Mpofu who passed away in 1998 and her mother was Dorcas Sibanda from Sengwa it occurred to me that the girl was our family member.”

Betty said Siphilisiwe took the Sibanda surname from her mother who later eloped with another man after Obed went into hiding.

She revealed that Nkululeko and Siphilisiwe never met in their early childhood.

“She has all the distinguishing features pointing to the fact that she is indeed a family member. Siphilisiwe’s mother was my childhood friend. We went to the same school in Mateta 2 in the 1980s,” she said.

Nkululeko Mpofu met Siphilisiwe Sibanda during a Methodist church meeting in Bulawayo three years ago.

“I am very surprised because I never bothered to find out about her family. It never occurred to me that we were related and I never even looked at her birth certificate to check her parent’s names,” Nkululeko Mpofu said.

Meanwhile, relatives are preparing to convene for a family meeting in Nkayi to cement family relations.
A family spokesperson Clyde Mpofu said that his family was preparing for a ceremony in which they would gather together to appease the spirits at their village in Nkayi.
